Bio here, bio there, bio everywhere- but also INSIDE?

What does sustainable certification mean?   Sustainable standards implement a voluntary use of norms and standards that are linked to environmental, social, ethical and food safety issues. This idea started in the 1980s with the first “Ecolabels”, as well as organic food standards. The most important issues are environmental quality, social equity and economic prosperity.   What is sustainable consumption?   “The use of services and related products which respond to basic needs and bring a better quality of life while minimizing the use of natural resources and toxic materials as well as emissions of waste and pollutants over the life cycle of the service or product so as not to jeopardize the needs of future generations.” (Oxford definition, www.wikipedia.com). Shortly said this means to ensure:

  • Quality of life
  • Minimizing waste and pollution
  • Wise use of resources (renewable)
  • Intergenerational equity
  • Better product life-cylces

When is a product organic?   Organic food is produced with methods of organic farming. It is a heavily regulated industry. It has different descriptions in their different jurisdictions, but generally it ensures to integrate cultural, biological and mechanical  practices that foster cycling of resources, conserve the biodiversity and promote ecological balance. It is not allowed to use synthetic pesticides and chemical fertilizers. Under limited conditions exceptionally certain organically approved pesticides may be used. Furthermore irradiation, industrial solvents and chemical food additives are forbidden in use. To be certified organic the products must fulfill the organic agricultural standards and the set standards of the country they are sold in. In the European Union this is described in the EU- Eco-regulation. index        Is organic food saver, more nutritious and does it taste better?   This is a public belief that is not yet scientific proven. There is no evidence that it is better than conventional food. Great advices from various experts and doctors claim that genetically modified food, food that chemically treated or treated with pesticides can cause serious health problems. The effects on the human body can not be maintained yet, as the period of scientific research is not long enough. What can be said for sure is that the ethical reasons should be reason enough to chose a biological product.   Written by Elisabeth Daniela Weissitsch.
