Earthquake destroyed harbour in Kefalonia

Lefkada, 3. February, 2014. For the second time in between 8 days a heavy earthquake shaked the Ionian Islands with the epicenter in Kefalonia. The seism with minimum 5,7 refered to the Richter scale (Geodydamic center of Athens) destroyed a lot according to Alexandros Parisis, the major of Kefalonia.   earthquake Kefalonia Reports are telling that at least 10 people are injured and big damages happened in the harbour of Argostoli, the capital city of Kefalonia. Officially Kefalonia declared a state of emergency. Already at the 26 of January a seism with power of 5,9 made considerable damages. In Kefalonia 7 people got slightly injured on that day.   Also in Lefkada the trembling was noticable, as eyewitnesses are reporting. Marilyne Neyrolles, a french volunteer in Lefkada is telling: “Last Sunday it was my first earthquake in my life, because we don´t have them in France. I was very afraid…”   The Ionian Islands are a common region for earthquakes. 1953 an earthquake with 7,2 Richter destroyed big parts of Zakynthos, Ithaka and Kefalonia. Big damages also in Lefkada were caused by the earthquake in 2003 which was 6,4 Richter. Since the earthquake of 1953, according to some locals in Lefkada, the region now is very safe, because houses were built with a very high standard of stability.   Article written by Elisabeth Weissitsch.
