Tsiknopempti (Τσικνοπέμπτη) in Lefkada

The “Fat Thursday” is a traditional feast on the last Thursday before Lent. In Greece it is the beginning of Carnival. The word Tsiknopempti means “Thursday of the smell of burned meat”. Fortunately this is only metaphorical, as everywhere around people grill Souflaki on barbeques.

3 2Traditionally this is the beginning of the carneval period, that lasts three weeks. Profoní, Kreatiní and Tyrofágou (Προφωνή, Κρεατινή και της Τυροφάγου). As the word “kreas”, which means meat, hidden in Kreatini says, it is the weak where a lot of meat is eaten before the period of fasting starts. In difference to other countries, in Greece people can wear costumes in all this three weeks.   1Yesterday in Lefkada people decorated the Agora and played music everywhere around. Finally at around 8 o´clock we could also see and join the parade of the traditional dancers. There was a place on the main square to dance and to have fun, where after the dancing groups of Lefkada performed traditional dances from all over Greece. The final was a carnival dance from Zakynthos, performed from the members of Orfeas dancing group. You can find a video about the dances attached:5 http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vKh1f8ljvwI&feature=youtu.be Tsiknopempti is an important cultural event and the social meaning is very high, as people meet, talk, and spend their time together. Also the sharing of the grilled Souflakia is part of the custom. Also for the local gastronomy this day has a big impact. 4
